Activities of the Centre
|
|
 |
Since its inception, the Centre has been actively engaged in
various activities aimed at promoting science education in schools.
Programs undertaken by the Centre during the period April 1985 to June2000
are:
-
Prepared directories of Muslim Managed Educational
Institutions (NMEls) and Deeni Madaris (DMs).
-
Conducted educational surveys of MMEls and DMs through
questionnaires, to assess their science education programmes, to know
their attitudes and problems regarding the introduction of science
teaching (in DMs) and for improving the quality of science teaching in
MMEls. The response was not very encouraging and was not analyzed.
Sent teachers from A.M.U. to some Deeni Madaris and MMEls for advise and
help.
-
Regular organization of Refresher Courses and Workshops
(of 10-12 days' duration) for science teachers (of Classes IX to XII) of
MMEls. These attract a large number of requests for participation from
all over the country and have been the backbone of the activities of the
Centre.
|
-
Organization of Introductory Science Courses (Tarrufi-Tarbiati
Programmes) for teachers from Deeni Madaris. These have been very
successful as a part of creating awareness of the importance of
acquiring scientific knowledge. It is expected that these will also
motivate a large number of DMs to ultimately introduce science
teaching in their curricula. The process has already started.
-
Compilation of lecture notes given by the faculty
members during the Courses and their distribution to the
participants. Books and relevant resource material were also gifted
to the participants.
-
Organization of Conferences/ Seminars of Muslim
scientists, educationists and principals/ managers of MMEls and DMs.
The first such conference, organized by the Centre from Jan 15-17,
1986, was inaugurated by Prof. Abdus Salam (Nobel Laureate). It was
very successful and its Proceedings were published by the Centre in
1986. Appreciable change, towards science education, has been
observed in the attitudes of the Ulemas and Deeni Madaris. Some
progress has been made in the introduction of science teaching in
Deeini Madaris.
|
 |
- Organization of Orientation Programmes (like use of computers in
teaching) for teachers of MMEIs.
- Preparatory work for the translation of elementary science
textbooks forUrdu medium schools and DMs.
- CPS prizes for best science students at M.Sc. level. These were
given in 1988 and discontinued later on.
- CPS Tahzibul Akhlaq Prizes for popular science writing in Urdu
were given by Prof Abdus Salam on May 13,1989.
