The need for creating an institution to help the Indian Muslim minority
community to come out of the mire of illiteracy in Sciences was first voiced
by Prof. Israr Ahmad in an article published in the Urdu fortnightly 'Tahzibul
Akhlaq' (Vol 3, No 20, 1984). The article presented a proposal for the
creation of a Centre under the patronage of the Aligarh Muslim University to
impress upon the Indian Muslims the increasing need and importance of
acquiring scientific knowledge, and also to provide possible help in this
matter. Soon after, the proposal was reframed and details worked out,
especially with the assistance of Dr. S. A. Hashim Rizvi and Dr. F.Mujib,
Mr. Saiyid Hamid and Professor K.M. Bahauddin, the then Vice-Chancellor and
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University respectively, took very keen interest
in the proposal, which resulted in the inception of the 'Centre for
Promotion of Science' (CPS) in its present form, on March 26, 1985.
Subsequently, Mr. Syed Hashim Ali took over charge of the University as
its Vice-Chancellor on April 8, 1985. He welcomed the creation of the
Centre as "a valuable service to the country and the Indian Muslim
community on the part of the University" and committed his full support
and patronage to it. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wasiur Rahman, also
extended all possible help and encouragement to the Centre at the various
stages of its development.
